80’s Ramp Building

I fell in love with vert ramps right out of the gate. Living in Northern Virginia in the 80’s, we saw a host of ramps that were well, pure shit. I’ve had splinters and nails ripping through flesh and got the scars to prove it. None of us really knew what we were doing back then. A couple acted like it but the result was always the same: kinks here and there, coping sticking out too far, coping not sticking out at all, oververt, undervert and so on. We built them poorly but goddamnit they went up anyways.

I decided to do a google search of some gems from the 80’s so I could share these classic projects. Each photo tells hundreds of stories, I’m sure many of you can relate. Check these out, head down to your local park, and remind yourself how good you have it.

Looking back, I couldn’t have been happier. It seems today that kids have more time for skating. They’re blessed with perfect parks in all directions, each featuring a plethora of concrete bowls and vertical terrain. In my day we spent a ton of time building complete shit. During these misguided times, we built great friendships and learned how to rip in any condition.
